Making More Space for Luggage on Long Trips

Whether you’re travelling alone or with family, it’s normal to run out of space. From carrying luggage to sports equipment, there are lots of things you need to take on a long trip, so it’s important to make the most of the space you have. There are also ways you can maximise the space in your car when you need to carry more, so here are some ideas.

Fold down your back seats

If you have a car that has folding, or even removable back seats, then this can give you lots of space for luggage on long trips. It’s also useful if you need to pull over and take a nap, as even small cars can have plenty of space to lie down.

Get a roof rack

A roof rack is an excellent way to carry more luggage easily. You can find one to fit your car at Coastals, and they can either be professionally fitted, or you can do it yourself.

Some reasons why roof racks are handy include:

  • They free up space inside your car
  • They are rectangle shaped so you can fit a lot in there
  • You don’t have the danger of loose objects in the car
  • You can lock a roof rack for extra security on the go

Many modern cars already have roof rack fittings, so they are easy to add, just make sure you don’t overload your car as this can damage the suspension and tyres.

Play boot Tetris

Don’t load your boot in stages. Pile everything that needs to be put in the boot next to the car, then find a way for it to all fit in, like a game of Tetris. The best strategy is usually to put the largest items in first, then fit smaller items in any available spaces. Soft items can be squeezed in the corners.

Vacuum your luggage

Instead of taking big, bulky suitcases, pack clothes, bedding and soft items into vacuum bags and then suck out the excess air. This cuts down on the amount of space that you need to use, and when you arrive at your destination, all you need to do is release the valve and your items puff back up. If you have to take your own bedding such as duvets or pillows, then these bags are ideal, as they take up barely any space.

Use a bike or ski rack

If you’re taking bikes or skis with you, save space inside your car by fitting a special rack. You can then carry these bulky items on the outside of your car, saving space inside for luggage and people inside. It also keeps expensive items safe when you travel.

When you have a long trip, you’ll want to be able to maximise the space inside your car so you can bring the things you need, while still being comfortable. The above tips will allow you to take the essentials, without having to adjust your seat or end up with bags all over the floor.
